Local Appraisal Fair Yields Bugatti Bronze Treasure

LOCAL APPRAISAL FAIR YIELDS BUGATTI BRONZE TREASURE

The February 19th sale at Burchard Galleries, Inc in St Petersburg will also feature hundreds of artworks, fabulous gold, platinum and diamond jewelry.

A magnificent bronze elephant, 10.8" h. x 15" w. x 4.8" d, walked into a local appraisal fair where a representative of Burchard Galleries was working.  The gentleman had no idea of the importance or value but a Burchard representative certainly did.  As told, the piece was gifted from several wealthy ladies who were world travelers, to their caretaker over 45 years ago then to his nephew approximately 10 years ago.   It was that nephew who brought the Rembrandt Bugatti (1884-1916) Bronze Elephant to the fair.

Rare and highly prized, Bugatti's animal bronzes have commanded in excess of 2 million dollars at auction and are found in many museum and gallery collections all over the world. Bugatti battled depression.  During World War I, the Antwerp Zoo was forced to kill most of its animals, many of which were Bugatti’s beloved subjects and as a result, he took his own life at a very young age of 31.  He is of the same family as Carlo, a furniture craftsman, and the most famous, Ettore, automotive engineer and design legend.

SHANNON’S FINE ART AUCTIONEERS POSTS RECORD YEAR IN 2011, GROSSING ABOUT $7,600,000 IN JUST TWO SALES; THE APRIL AUCTION GROSSED $5,100,000

Consignments are now being accepted for the April 26, 2012 auction, which might top them all.

(MILFORD, Conn.) – Shannon Fine Art Auctioneers enjoyed a banner year in 2011, grossing over $7.6 million in just two sales. It was a record year for the firm, which conducts two auctions per year (in April and October) in its gallery located at 354 Woodmont Road in Milford. Shannon’s is currently accepting quality consignments for its next big sale, planned for Apr. 26.

While the October 2011 event was a solid, respectable auction, grossing $2.5 million, the April sale was the real barn-burner, with some spectacular consignments and eager bidders combining for a $5.1 million gross. That was by far the most Shannon’s had posted in one sale, and that came as good - but not unexpected - news for Gene Shannon, the owner of the company.
